I wonder if the Devils consider letting Allen go, next season, if Daws continues to show well. He's been very, very good since getting called up, and he was superb last night - nearly perfect economy of motion, which is so important for bigger goalies.
I could definitely see that come to fruition if they're comfortable with Daws' game in a backup role. Hopefully, he's able to show out more in the NHL down the stretch so there's a clearer picture there because you're absolutely right -- if he continues playing like he has and putting himself in great positions, there's no reason he can't make it in a backup capacity.
My concerns with Daws are 1) his sample size, which is extremely small, 2) his middling AHL statistical profile, and 3) the fact that he's a wild card.
Allen has been average at worst during his career and this season is the best backup goalie in the league, so I still think he probably has more value being brought back as the backup next year than Daws in that role.
Yeah, I agree with all of that - I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable letting Allen go with the amount of information we have so far.
However, I'm enthused with how he's played since coming back up, and at very least he gives the Devils the luxury of letting Markstrom take his time, coming back.
